In Venice it's possible to live like a doge or bed-down in a room filled with backpackers, but with terra firma at such a premium don't be surprised to learn that hotel rooms come with a hefty price tag. However, if you're prepared to spend some time shopping around on the Internet you should be able to find something that's within your financial reach. In fact, with 10 million annual visitors and a population of just 70,000, there are probably more hotel rooms than bedrooms.
During the summer months Venice tends to be overrun with visitors, and if you're hoping to stay it's essential that you book your accommodation well in advance. If you've left everything to the last minute and arrive without anywhere to stay the Venetian Hoteliers Association at Marco Polo airport and Santa Lucia train station should be able to find you something.
Unfortunately many of Venice's hoteliers haven't got their heads around the idea of a 'low season' and this can be reflected in year-round high prices. Officially however the low season runs from mid-November to mid-March (excluding Christmas) and it's worth asking for a discount. A legal requirement stipulates that room prices are displayed in each room (usually on the back of the door), so it's possible to check that you're not paying over the odds. Most room tariffs include a continental breakfast. Hotels often throw in freebies (such as boat trips to the outlying islands) in an attempt to sweeten the bitter cost of accommodation. Hard cash is the hoteliers preferred currency, and is often rewarded with discounts of up to 10%.
Once you've booked your hotel it's important to ensure that they send you detailed directions of how to find it. Navigating your way round Venice's watery streets is notoriously tricky and the chances are that you'll soon end up lost (which, if you consider that water-taxis rarely cost less than € 50, could end up being an expensive business).
