Prague has so much to offer that anyone on a short break in the city might well wonder how on earth they are going to cram it all in. To make sure that you get the most out of your stay we've whittled down the city's attractions to the best of a very good bunch.
Prague Castle : Known locally as Pražský Hrad, Prague Castle boasts some formidable statistics. This glorious architectural hotchpotch has been home to the Czech government since the 9th century and is the largest castle in antiquity. Inside the castle's fortified walls there's more than enough to swallow up an entire afternoon, including: a royal palace, ornate chapels, beautifully manicured gardens and a handful of galleries and museums. Keep an eye out for Franz Kafka's former home (one of the cottages in Golden Lane), and don't leave without having a good look around St Vitus Cathedral.
Charles Bridge : Charles Bridge has spanned the River Vltava for more than half a millennium, uniting both halves of this endlessly intriguing city. Ornamented with more than 75 statues the bridge itself is undeniably impressive, but it plays second fiddle to the breath-taking views of the city lit up at night.
A night on the Pivo : Beer is an essential part of any short break in Prague and it's something that the locals take very seriously indeed. Aficionados should consider making a pilgrimage to the nearby town of Pilsen (80km south of the city) or the suburban Staropramen brewery, while for many it's enough to sample the final product in the myriad of pubs and bars that dot the city.
A float on the Vltava : One of the best ways to see the city is from the waterline. If you've got the strength you can hire a rowing boat (lit by lanterns after dusk), otherwise there are plenty of cruisers to choose from.
Trade Fair Palace : Prague has long exerted an artistic influence disproportionate to its size, and today the city serves up more than enough galleries to satisfy even the most culturally peckish. Contemporary tastes are best catered for in the Trade Fair Palace, a modernist masterpiece completed in 1928 which includes works by Picasso, Van Gough and Munch as well as the cream of the Czech artistic crop.
Old Town Square : Even visitors suffering from architectural fatigue can't fail to be impressed by Prague's civic centrepiece. Most cameras tend to be pointing at the astronomical clock or the art nouveau Jan Hus monument. Head away from the square and get ready to loose yourself in an atmospheric warren of medieval streets.
