Prague may be feted for many things, but the standard of its accommodation isn't one of them. Admittedly the capital's hotel scene has come on a long way since the Iron Curtain was lifted on the city, but it's still got a long way to go.
Prague seems to have got the hang of luxury, and at the top end of the market the capital's best hotels will give any in Europe a run for their money. However, as the number of stars falls you'll notice that you begin to get considerably less for your money. Accommodation in Prague doesn't come cheap, and no matter what category of hotel you book into you'll probably feel that you are paying over the odds.
Deciding where to stay largely depends on what you want to get out of the city. If you're looking old-world charm and peace and quite the districts of Hradcany and Malá Strana are a safe bet, while night owls would be better placed in the Old Town (Staré Mesto). If you're happy to forgo the historic city centre, where tough planning laws restrict new buildings, you'll find a number of reasonably priced hotels in the outlying suburbs.
If you arrive in Prague without anywhere to stay, don't be tempted to succumb to the relentless haranguing of the touts that inhabit the airport and rail stations; instead head for the tourist office where they should be able to point you in the direction of a reputable accommodation agency. If you decide to go down this route make sure that your lodgings are easily reached by public transport and ask to see picture of your room before handing over any payment.
The popularity of the Czech capital means that it's a good idea to book accommodation in advance if you're planning to visit during the high season, which in Prague runs from spring to autumn. Easter and Christmas are especially hard hitting on the wallet, while room prices can fall by a third over the quieter winter months.
