Discount shoes are obviously available on the internet, but can also be bought at factory outlets, discount branches of major High Street retailers, and in the January or summer sales.

You will often find that shopping online is the easiest way of finding a decent range of discount shoes. Online companies have very low overheads, since they are able to save themselves money by avoiding shop-rental costs and by hiring very few employees. As a result, they are able to offer shoes at discount prices and still make a reasonable profit. If you see a great pair of shoes in a shop, it is worth doing an internet search to see if they are going cheap online, whether through one of the many online shoe shops or direct from the manufacturer.

The advantages and disadvantages of shopping online are now very well known, but it is important to exercise caution when buying anything online: make sure you know exactly how much you are going to have to pay for postage and packing, only give your credit card details to reputable traders, and make sure there is some sort of refund policy should you need to return the shoes - for instance, if they don’t fit, don’t suit you or if you somehow end up with the wrong pair.

Discount shoes on the High Street

A number of major High Street retailers now operate discount outlets, where they sell older collections and remaining stock. Since they would rather sell older items – at any price - than have to throw them away, the prices can get ridiculously low. You can find out which retailers have discount stores by looking at their websites or calling their customer helpline.

The bonus of buying shoes from discount stores is that you are able to check them for quality and try them on. The disadvantage is that remaining stock tends to be made up of the least popular sizes – extra large and extra small – since the regular sizes will have sold out on the High Street.

Again, you may well find that the selection of styles and sizes left over for the end-of-season sales is extremely limited. It is best not to rely on sales to find a really great pair of shoes, but it is definitely worth remembering that you can pick up some excellent bargains from time to time – especially if you have very large or very small feet: the women’s section usually has a huge pile of size 3½ and size 8 shoes, with very little in between.
