TV shopping became very popular in the US in the 1980s, when the culture was spend, spend and spend, and any new ways to reach the customer were gladly welcomed. TV viewers spent millions of dollars on jewellery, clothes, household goods and assorted wares such as porcelain dolls, cat-shaped lamps and gadgets they surely didn't need!
Two networks in the States have battled it out for control over the TV shopping market. These are the Home Shopping Network (HSN) and Quality Value Convenience (QVC). HSN was the original TV shopping channel - QVC was a relative latecomer to the market after a few other TV shopping channels had opened. TV shopping channels' popularity was such that presenters on the channels became minor celebrities. The channels used hard selling techniques and imposed time restrictions on how long items were available for to increase the pressure on the buyer.
TV home shopping is still going now. Customers can buy electronic goods, sports gear, designer goods and big brands from TV shopping channels. To buy goods from the television, phone up the number given and use a credit card to pay for the goods. TV shopping has an advantage in that the shopper can see the products and see them demonstrated from their own home. Unlike with door-to-door sales people, the customer can switch the television off when they have had enough.
US-based TV shopping channels are also available in other countries across Europe and Asia. The channels are becoming increasingly international. Channels have started using minor celebrities to sell their goods. Getting athletes and other well-known people to promote their goods on air is one way of capturing the viewer's attention - and money. Exercise videos, programs, and equipment such as rowing machines are advertised in this way.
TV home shopping channels also hold auctions on the television so you can watch the bidding from your armchair. Watching TV shopping channels can be good entertainment value, even if you don't want to buy anything. TV presenters make extravagant claims and are often entertaining to watch, rather like watching a stallholder on an East End market go through his patter to sell his dubious wares to the unsuspecting public.
