Let's go shopping for lingerie online...

There are many options with regards to "lingerie shops" and shopping for lingerie. Traditionally the High Street was the first place to look for affordable lingerie. Many clothes shops and department stores do a range of lingerie, including nightwear. These come in standard sizes, usually up to clothes size 16 and bra cup size C. Some fashion shops are starting to stock bras with larger bra cup sizes now. In the UK people are becoming bigger generally from generation to generation, so need larger clothes and this is being reflected in the range of sizes available in most lingerie shops.

Specialist lingerie shops sell bridal, maternity and plus size among other types of lingerie. These have the advantage of carrying a wider range and being specifically geared to your needs. Designer types are available which are more expensive but often very good quality and can be custom made to ensure a perfect fit. Department stores usually sell famous brands, while High Street clothes shops usually have their own make.

Some shops now have mail ordering available. They will send you a catalogue with pictures of the items and prices and when you have placed your order, the items are sent direct to your house. This is more convenient than shopping in person, but it takes longer to acquire the goods and returning goods can be a pain.

More and more people are turning to shopping online as a viable alternative to visiting lingerie shops. This works in a similar way to shopping by catalogue, except that the customer can view and select their lingerie via the shop's website, place their order online and even pay online using their debit or credit card. Many find this a less time-consuming way to shop. Some people prefer to see and touch what they are buying. There is not such a wide palette of colours available through a Web browser (the program you use to view Web pages), so it is hard to render the exact colour of the item being sold. With lingerie especially, the texture of the garment can be important. However online lingerie shops do have returns policies, usually allowing customers to return unworn items free of charge. This means they can try the lingerie on at home, and return it if it isn't suitable. Some people prefer personal touch, while others relish the convenience and privacy of online shopping, with no crowded streets to negotiate, or parking spaces to find.

A good lingerie shop is like a good vintner - you get what you pay for, and the contents can cause intoxication. There are a few golden rules if you want to be serious about lingerie shopping. First, always buy sets, never just bra or knickers (unless you're in Marks and Spencers: famously purveyor of pants to the Iron Lady, but also a good place to find cheap knickers of all shapes and sizes).

Second, get measured properly. It's amazing what a difference it makes to wear the right bra size, and it's amazing how many women don't. Even something as simple as this can be done in style by going to Rigby and Peller, the Queen's Bond Street corsetiers. They also - as the description suggests - make corsets. This is one of the most interesting undergarments around and well worth investing in. It has in recent times been used most commonly as outerwear but may well be making a comeback in its original capacity as scaffolding under a frock or a shirt. A corset doesn't need to be seen to make its presence obvious - the shape it creates will cause a stir. Anyway, we digress.

Third, never buy underwear for yourself without trying it on first. Knowing your size, though essential, only goes so far because the small variations between different brands can make a big difference to comfort or appearance.

Fourth is again on the measuring theme - if you are buying for a girlfriend, make sure you know her size. Many Valentine's nights have ended in tears for either or both parties because of a pair of oversized pants. And try to find out what she likes - a delicate floral set can be just as much of a turn on as something more overtly sexy if she feels you've bought it to please her first and foremost (just keep quiet about any ulterior motives and go with the flow).

Fifth, if you habitually handwash lingerie rather than putting it in the machine you will double its lifespan. This means more and/or better for your money. There are plenty of other things to know about lingerie shopping, but if you keep to these basic rules you won't go too far wrong.
