The word fondue comes from the French word 'fondre' - to melt.
Fondue was actually invented centuries ago in Switzerland as a way of making dried-out cheese more appetizing. The cheese, usually Gruyère or Emmental, would be melted in a communal pot with wine or brandy and then bread would be dipped into it.
Although cheese fondue has been around for a long, long time in Europe, it has only recently become popular in this country. The UK market is now full of sets and recipe books with easy new recipe ideas, but one of the most celebrated variations on the classic fondue recipe is the delicious chocolate fondue.
You can either use a standard fondue pot for your chocolate fondue (as long as it has been well-cleaned), or you can buy a specialist chocolate fondue set. Chocolate fondue sets are available at most good department stores or specialist cookware shops. There are so many different types of chocolate fondue sets - some are large, some are small, some are non-stick, and some even come with dipping folks and a 'Lazy Susan' (a revolving tray that means everyone gets a chance to try everything!). The price you pay can vary tremendously from manufacturer to manufacturer, and will also be dependant on the above factors.
Once you have bought the fondue set, here's a simple but delicious chocolate fondue recipe to get you started.
Ingredients
Half a pint ( 235ml) double cream
12oz / 340g chopped chocolate
1 teaspoon vanilla or 3 tbsp kirsch, rum or brandy
Method
Heat the cream in a medium-sized saucepan over a low heat for two to three minutes.
Add the chocolate and stir until it has completely melted in with the cream.
Stir in the vanilla (or alcohol).
Transfer to a warm fondue pot, preferably ceramic.
Serve the fondue with a plate of fresh strawberries, raspberries, bananas, marshmallows and almond biscotti.
(Serves six to eight people)
