Italian charm bracelets have been one of the biggest things to hit the American jewelry scene in years, but the trendy bracelets had a humble beginning in a workshop in Florence.

It was the late 1980s when Paulo Gensini (an ex-mechanical worker) decided to open up a jewelry making business called Nomination, and came up with the concept and original design of the ‘composable’ bracelet. Made of hypoallergenic stainless steel and gold, the unisex bracelet was of a modular design that featured an interlinking base bracelet which square charms could be added to. Originally it was a ‘letter’ bracelet, but nowadays thousands of different charms featuring symbols, characters, letters and pictures are available for purchase.

Nomination enjoyed a huge success from their creation, which saw the bracelet’s popularity skyrocket throughout the European fashion world, and eventually take off all over the world.

Companies went on to copy the design, and the market has been flooded with different brands of bracelet – although most charms from the major brands are interchangeable with other companies’ bracelets. Manufacturers now come from all areas of the world – from Asia to America, but the best charms and jewelry still comes from the original Italian manufacturers.

Italian charm bracelets are hugely popular in the United States (and have been since their introduction to the country during the 1990s), and have become one of the most sought after jewelry items available on the market – and they are showing no signs of slowing down anytime in the near future.
