Having a baby can be one of the most emotional and joyful times of your life, but deciding that you are ready to take on the responsibility of being a parent is only one step in the amazing process of pregnancy. Women today can choose to put off having children until the time suits them, but it is just as important to prepare your body as well as your mind for the big occasion. It will help you conceive faster and go a long way to ensuring a problem-free pregnancy.
See your doctor
If you're considering having a baby you should see your doctor to discuss your medical history or any pre-existing medical conditions. Your doctor can also advise you on general health matters, check your rubella immunity (German measles can cause deafness, blindness and heart disease if caught in the first trimester of pregnancy) and answer any questions you may have. You may also want to have a pap smear as doctors will not perform one during pregnancy.
Get fit
The fitter you are prior to having a baby the better your body will cope with the changes that follow conception. Build your fitness level gradually and include exercises to strengthen your posture and lower back. If you are already exercising regularly you may want to discuss a reduced fitness program with your doctor for when you become pregnant.
Healthy eating
Eating properly is an important factor for both you and your partner. Prospective parents should reduce salt intake and avoid highly processed foods while increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet. A nutritious diet in both parents gives a baby the best chance of developing strongly and enjoying good health throughout its life. It also prepares your body for the changes that pregnancy brings, as well as ensuring a good supply of nutrients for the baby from the moment it is conceived.
Limit alcohol intake
Excessive alcohol consumption can reduce fertility levels so prospective parents should limit their alcohol intake. When you do conceive you may not know it for several weeks and excessive alcohol intake during this time can be detrimental to the health of your baby.
Quit smoking
If you're considering having a baby both you and your partner should quit smoking. Smoking reduces fertility levels by up to 30% in women and smokers are likely to take much longer to conceive than non-smokers.
Take Folic acid
Folic acid is a B group vitamin vital for healthy cell development. Few women get enough folic acid through their normal diet so it is recommended that anyone planning a pregnancy should take folic acid supplements for three months prior to conception as well as during the early stages of pregnancy. If you take prescribed medications you should discuss this with your health professional.
