Great Falls Balloon Festival - Spectacular Annual Balloon Fiesta

The Great Falls Balloon Festival takes place every year around the third week of August. Held in the state of Maine , the festival is a family event which incorporates the delightful communities of Lewiston and Auburn . Entrance to the festival is free, and the event is held to raise money for non-profit organisations in the area.

The focal point of the fiesta is undoubtedly the numerous balloon launches that occur in the early mornings and evenings. This year saw over 40 balloons sailing off into the azure Maine skies. Among some of the more memorable were the Octopus' Garden Balloon, the Brazilian Clown Balloon, the enormous Amazon Tree, and the delightful Purple People eater.

Launches generally take place around 6am in the mornings and 5:30pm in the evenings. In addition to hot air balloons, the launches also feature both paragliders and parachutes. During morning launches, spectators and balloonists will be able to enjoy 'Breakfast with the Balloons.' Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and lemonade all provide the perfect wake up call, and are accompanied by hearty breakfasts including muffins, pancakes, corn on the cob and barbequed ribs.

In addition to the spectacular balloon launches, the Great Falls Balloon Festival also features dazzling night glows which typically take place on both Friday and Saturday evenings. Fully inflated balloons are bound and lit up with propane to create a brilliant display which illuminates the night sky. This is accompanied by an astounding fireworks display which can be seen for miles on end.

Other entertainment at the festival includes live music, dance and karate demonstrations and a skateboarding competition to name but a few. Candles, clothing jewellery and books are some of the many items that are available at the craft market, while duck races, face painting and carnival rides are provided for the enjoyment of children of all ages. Furthermore, dramatic jet displays and stock racing are sure to get the adrenalin going in folks of all ages.

A photo competition is held every year in which balloon photographs taken at the festival are put into various categories and judged according to criteria such as colour, composition and subject matter. Awards are then handed and the winning photos put on display for the public to view.
